The “Debian installer main menu” – Part 9

Overview

In this section of the Debian installer main menu you will select and install software, determine if security updates will be automatically installed and decide to participate in software surveys. You can choose to install the default GNOME desktop or something different or use multiple desktops. You can even decide to make your Debian 11 OS installation a minimum server installation with no desktop GUI installed.

Select And Install Software

At the Debian installer main menu select Select and install software and click Continue.

Automatic Security Updates

I recommend to keep the default setting ‘No automatic updates‘, you will need to manually install any security updates. Click Continue.

Package Usage Survey

You will now be ask if you want to participate in a package usage survey. The Default is No and I’d leave it as such and just click Continue.

Software Selection

Now you are at the Software selection menu. The default selections are ‘Debian desktop environment‘, ‘GNOME‘ and ‘standard system utilities‘. If you want to build a minimum install server, you should uncheck these defaulted selections.

You should install the ‘SSH server‘ so you can access your server from the local network as soon as the installation is completed. I like to keep the Debian desktop GNOME GUI and standard utilities, this will be up to you to decide. Set your software selections and click Continue.

Your software selections will be ready to use as soon as you reboot your computer into the newly installed Debian 11 OS.
